Cardinal Cupich says Sunday Mass on ABC TV channel 7 in Chicago at 9:30 A.M., and will for the duration of the covid 19 problem. The mass takes 30 minutes. I record it so I can watch it later in the day. I usually go to church for the 11 o'clock service.
Last night my husband asked how come the mass only takes 30 minutes, instead of the hour that we have at our local church. I just started to laugh. He takes me to church and picks me up in an hour and a quarter. A few reasons for that. First I get there early. Second, we sing a lot and the choir director leads us through all the verses. Third, our pastor does not make short sermons and there's usually somebody updating us on functions too. Fourth, almost the whole congregation goes to communion. Fifth, I linger a while after mass is over. With a cane, I don't move fast, so I let the crowd go out before I leave.
But I wonder, what about all the other religious congregations? Do any of them have a TV service that they can turn on? You can't tell by the TV listings. In fact channel 7 only listed the 9:30 mass the first time it was on. The cardinal does his own reminders. Another channel, I think it's channel 9, has a mass at 9:30 from the Mercy Home. That has been on for a long time so it is listed in the channel guide.
Palm Sunday and Easter masses were on on their respective Sundays at Noon and were listed in the online guide. The cardinal offered the masses, which were one hour each and even included some singing. I have to go online to hear my favorite Easter Hymn. "Alleluia, let the holy anthems ring."
It's on you tube by several groups.
